1:02 Sticky Tongues
Third graders simulated what can happen to frog eggs in their environment by using a straw as a predator, a paper plate as the environment and tapioca pudding as frog eggs. Later, students toured the science lab to collect data of the vertebrates: guinea pigs, fish and toad. After that, these young scientists simulated how a frog catches flies using a blower and plastic flies. Conclusions were drawn about how vertebrates are adapted to survive in their environments.

00:31 Storybook Parade
Today we celebrated the end of our first Reading Workshop unit! After weeks of reading storybooks, all of our hard work culminated with a parade around the school. We each chose our favorite storybook, practiced all of the things we have been learning, made posters and marched around the school, proudly displaying our books. Our parade ended in Mrs. Robertson's room, where a few students showed off their very best reading for the 1st graders and we were paraded out with a tunnel. We celebrated, paraded and proclaimed to the world: WE ARE STORYBOOK READERS!

00:25 Reading Workshop - sharing
The students worked on retelling fiction stories in reader's workshop today. They got together with their reading partners to share their retells! A great retell includes the title, setting, characters, problem, events (beginning, middle, end) and the author's message. Ask your student to give a retell of their books tonight!

1:03 Inherited Traits + Camouflage/Mimicry
Fourth grade scientists investigated how inherited traits such as camouflage can help the offspring of a species survive. Students acknowledged some of their own inherited traits; then, they simulated "Hide and Seek" with an owl swooping on rodent prey with "tweezer" like talons. Using a chart students analyzed how generations of a species may be affected by inherited traits.

5:03 Responsibilities
This year, our class will be partnering with a Kindergarten class in the village of Zirobwe, Uganda. We will be broadening our view of the world through getting a glimpse inside the lives of our friends across the globe. We worked together over the past few days to create our first video to send to our friends.

We incorporated our social studies curriculum into this video by first identifying responsibilities that we have at school. We worked together to brainstorm how we can capture these responsibilities and then shot our videos. Through practicing some of the routines that we are responsible for, we had a great opportunity to further review our routines and procedures in a meaningful way. The majority of this video is student recorded, giving your little ones full ownership! I think this might be a class full of future actors and directors. Come take a look at the things we are responsible for! Stay tuned to see what things our friends in Uganda are responsible for at school. Do you think there will be any similarities? -
1:03 Isopods On The Move
Third graders described how an isopod was adapted to survive in its environment by observing what the isopod did when coming to the edge of an object such as a limb, leaf or log. Other investigations included what an isopod did when landing on its back, how many centimeter squares an isopod traveled in 15 seconds, and preferences regarding wet/dry cornmeal and dark/light places. Much excitement surrounded these tiny friends.
