PTA President's Letter

Dear Armstrong Families,

Welcome to John S. Armstrong’s 2018-19 school year!  I am honored to serve as this year’s PTA President. This is an exciting year as we welcome our new principal, Mrs. Betsy Cummins, to Armstrong!

We are thrilled to unveil our theme for the 2018-19 school year: Willy Wonka!  Our Family Giving campaign, Armstrong Reads, and Carnival will each incorporate Willy Wonka author Ronald Dahl’s “Pure Imagination” magic!  Willy Wonka was chosen for our theme because Dahl’s works capture the creativity and imagination of childhood, while also inspiring a love of learning which is symbolic of the nurturing environment that is fostered at Armstrong.

The mission of the PTA is to partner with teachers, staff, and administrators to maintain Armstrong’s 104-year tradition of excellence. You can help continue this tradition in two ways: (1) volunteer; and (2) support fundraisers throughout the school year.

The PTA plans many exciting events for our students and parents during the school year.  Our events could not happen without our parent volunteers. There are countless opportunities to volunteer at Armstrong: cafeteria, Eagle Store, room parent, and many special event committees. Please contact specific event chairs for further information or visit VSP to sign up for current volunteer needs.

Part of continuing Armstrong’s longstanding tradition of excellence requires fundraising for our school. Highland Park Independent School District gives more than 70% of our tax dollars to the State of Texas every year, which leaves Armstrong with a budgetary shortfall. In order to maintain the caliber of education in our District, the PTA helps bridge the gap between the budget shortage in state funding and the cost to educate each HPISD student. Last year, approximately 90% of Armstrong’s annual operating expenses came through PTA raised funds. The PTA raises funds through the Family Giving campaign, Auction, Armstrong Reads, and Carnival, while also saving the District substantial amounts by parents volunteering in the cafeteria.

Last year the PTA gifted over $780,000 to Armstrong. The PTA funds ongoing expenses like:

  • Instructional assistants to help students one on one
  • Flex Space enhancements
  • District salary support
  • Copy machine leases
  • Faculty professional development programs
  • Teacher masters programs
  • Spanish program
  • Technology supplies
  • Science supplies
  • Computers, tablets, interactive television panels, and software

Thank you for your support and commitment to Armstrong! Through your generosity, we are providing each of Armstrong’s students the outstanding education they deserve.

Sincerely,
Lindsay Ballotta
