00:35 Mailing Persuasive Letters
Here's a quick little video showing the students mailing one of their persuasive letters from Writing Workshop. We took a short walk today to the mailbox at the corner of Abbott & Cornell as a culminating activity in our persuasive writing unit. Some students wrote letters to family members or staff members at school which will be hand-delivered. Other students chose to write & mail letters to individuals we don't personally know, such as Mayor Lane, Mayor Williams, Governor Abbott, President Obama, the HP police department, and Dr. Orr to convince them to do something. Some students also wrote to businesses including Souper Salad, GameStop, and McDonalds.

5:58 Uganda 1
Our room was filled with excitement this morning when we got a video from our friends in Uganda!! After they saw some of the things that we are responsible for at school, they made a video to let us know of the things they are responsible for. We found many similarities, like practicing numbers, putting things away and lining up, as well as many differences, such as taking off shoes at school and bringing your own cups for porridge. We are so excited to open up our worlds a little wider and continue to connect with our friends across the globe.

Fractions with Cuisenaire Rods
In second grade, it's very important for students to be able to use concrete tools when working with a concept like fractions. Today, we started just by exploring the concept of the whole, and breaking the whole up into parts. The challenge for today was to find three rods that equaled one of the larger rods. What students are doing as they compose and decompose these "wholes" is learning one of the most important concepts of number sense. There are lots of ways to make up the whole. That's true if the whole is a number or a Cuisenaire rod!
