Lumbricus Terrestris
What can we observe about the way earthworms (lumbricus terrestris) look and behave? Fourth graders investigated some of the decomposers' preferences during science lab: moist or dry, light or darkness, and sensitivity to touch. Many of our invertebrate friends, who acquired nicknames, will relocate in Alice's Garden soon to continue their special work.

A Polar Express Surprise!
Thank you for all your help in pulling off such a fun surprise!! The students found a train ticket underneath their chair this morning, and their warm, snugglies were passed out shortly afterward. Once we we all bundled up, we listened to one of my favorite holiday stories, "The Polar Express!" The students received their own sleigh bell. Hot chocolate and marshmallows awaited students at their desks as we listened to a re-read of the wonderful story. We then completed some fun reading comprehension and writing activities together. Each student received a special bell necklace to remember our fun morning !

Inherited Traits + Camouflage/Mimicry
Fourth grade scientists investigated how inherited traits such as camouflage can help the offspring of a species survive. Students acknowledged some of their own inherited traits; then, they simulated "Hide and Seek" with an owl swooping on rodent prey with "tweezer" like talons. Using a chart students analyzed how generations of a species may be affected by inherited traits.
