Welcome to Jump Start!

Welcome to Jump Start!

Our program utilizes the Highland Park Multi-Sensory Language Arts Program which is grounded in Orton-Gillingham methodology.  This program is not new to Highland Park, all teachers working with elementary students were trained in the program, initially developed by Beth Slingerland, who worked closely with Anna Gillingham, beginning in the early 1960’s.  The Jump Start program itself began in 1993 as a pull-out program to provide intensive reading instruction to struggling readers, those who might be “at risk” for dyslexia, as well as those diagnosed as dyslexic.   Strategies from Texas Scottish Rite Fluency programs as well as others are also utilized.  Current research indicates that dyslexic and struggling readers benefit most from a strong phonetic program utilizing multi-sensory strategies that address phonemic awareness, phonics instruction, fluency, comprehension and vocabulary instruction.  As important as systematic researched based instruction is to your child’s success in reading, it is also vital that parents read daily with students to improve reading skills.  When it comes to improving reading skills, practice makes perfect.  I am excited to partner with you to help foster a lifelong love of reading in your child!
